Mindy Kaling Reminds Us Why We Love Her, Yet Again
In her 35 years, Mindy has accomplished more than some will in a handful of lifetimes. She’s written a book that will forever hold special real estate in our hearts, she’s written a play, written for The Office (at 24, mind you!) and produced and starred in her own wonderful series. But no matter how much you’ve achieved, if you’re a successful single woman, there’s always pressure to “settle down.” It’s annoying.
In a recent interview with Flare, Mindy reminded us of two really important things when it comes to dealing with this pressure: that it’s okay to want things, and that it shouldn’t compromise the rest of your life.
“This has been the first year I realized that if I want to have three kids, I need to get going,” Mindy said. But she also said she “wasn’t stressed remotely” about turning 35 and she’s not incredibly driven to start a relationship at this moment.
“In my 20s, I was not only boy crazy, but marriage and relationship crazy. Now it’s almost the opposite. My work is so rewarding and I’m so self-centered about it that I’m kind of excited about not having to go home and ask someone about their day.”
The fact that Mindy feels free to casually date, wants kids when she’s ready for them, and finds her career incredibly fulfilling is so refreshing. Basically, she’s not letting the pressures of society dictate how she accomplishes her goals. She’s doing things her own way, and she’s not apologizing for putting work first.
She credits her parents for instilling in her a fierce work ethic, adding “in my career, well, maybe I can do anything.”
We believe it, coming from the woman who’s broken down barriers in the TV writing boys club. Still she recognizes the double standards that exist, particularly when it comes to being a confident woman in the workplace.
“Of course I’m riddled with doubts like every other creative, neurotic person, but if you don’t display them all the time, you’re seen as overconfident,” she told Flare. “I’ve worked in television for 10 years straight. If I were a man, it wouldn’t be considered strange [to have confidence] at all.”
Mindy Kaling is a total hero and inspiration, but above all, she’s a #bossbitch who apologizes to no one about her achievements, or her desires. She’s a role model who shows us that not only are we capable of doing anything we want, we can do those things without asking for someone’s permission first.
