Mindy Kaling has absolutely no dating advice for you
We look to Mindy Kaling because she is a wise, beautiful sage full of so much advice. Seriously. Her first book Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? reads like a conversation with your best friend who is here to help you through all of life’s tricky problems. Her newest book, Why Not Me? (out now!!) is the same thing. Kaling’s here for us. Unfortunately, though, she cannot help us with our love lives. Not at all.
“No one needs a late bloomer in their mid-30s telling other people how to date,” Kaling explains to People in this week’s issue, “I go out of my way not to do that in [Why Not Me?]”
“As someone who is probably classified by many people as a know-it-all, this would be one area where I truly cannot,” she says. “And I wish I could because I do have single friends and I have a lot of fun and interesting people in my life, but I am completely not helpful at all in this regard, which is terrible.”
But on the contrary, Kaling! We DO actually need that kind of advice, even if it is as you say, “terrible.” Doubtful that Kaling is capable of giving terrible life advice, anyway. Besides, she’s not the only one out there as a self-dubbed “late bloomer,” so reassurance and guidance from here would would actually be wonderful. We connect so much with Kaling (and her alter ego Mindy Lahiri) because her situations often aren’t so far-fetched for our own lives.
Kaling offers up to People an situation that wouldn’t be helpful, explaining that in order to date someone, she’s got to have either worked with them or gone to school with them, and further “be pressed into a mandatory situation with someone for many years in order to develop romantic feelings. So that’s not very helpful for other people.”
Maybe not necessarily helpful, but incredibly reassuring. Let’s be honest, I myself can’t be the only one who feels that exact same way. So hearing that Kaling’s like that, even though it’s not straight life advice, or dating advice, it’s good to hear. And suddenly I feel 1,000% better.
So beautiful Mindy, never stop doling out this “terrible” advice, OK?
