Mindy Kaling shared her text exchange with B.J. Novak about “Yanny” and “Laurel,” and it’s literally every heated chat we had last night
Mindy Kaling and B.J. Novak are best friends. This is fact. Last night, however, the Yanny vs. Laurel debate (aka 2018’s version of the blue dress vs. gold dress game) threatened to tear them apart, and honestly, same. Friends, lovers, and families were driven to madness last night by the Yanny vs. Laurel debacle. How could you hear Yanny?! How could you hear Laurel?!
Just like us, Kaling immediately texted her BFF to find out what he heard. Kaling was on Team Yanny, but Novak was on Laurel, and Kaling texted him, “Hey. We’ve had a long friendship. You mean a lot to me. But if you don’t hear Yanny, it’s over.” Novak responded, “Who hears Yanny?”
Ugghh. We feel this so hard. The good people of Twitter are right there with us and Kaling on the seriousness of the Yanny/Laurel divide. One woman tweeted, “My boyfriend thinks it’s yanny and I think I may need to break up with him. IT IS LAUREL.” Someone else tweeted, “I didn’t know that Yanny would be the hill I would die on but here I am, all my friends have become my enemies.”
By the way, the soundbite is *technically* Laurel. The New York Times discovered that it was pulled from the Vocabulary.com page for “Laurel” as the pronunciation guide. So, sorry, everyone, but it’s Laurel.

Below, Kaling and Novak’s “feud” over Yanny and Laurel.
Until the next viral craze to divide the nation, Kaling is firmly on Team Yanny.

We hope this didn’t seriously cause a rift in Kaling and Novak’s relationship — because if it did, who would we have left to ship?
