A Million Reasons Why Kesha is Super Lovable
I am an unapologetic Kesha fan to the bone. She won me over with “Tik Tok” even though it was blasting at every single house party I went to in college, and the thought of brushing my teeth with Jack Daniels seems a little too intense for me. She just seemed like such a relatable, fun girl. However, she definitely earned my infinite love and adoration after her honest announcement to her fans concerning her weight issues. In January, she checked into rehab because she almost died from an eating disorder. The mockery she faced from the music industry had gotten so brutal, so cruel, that Kesha wanted to kill herself. What made things worse, was her producer Dr. Luke and former manager David Sonenberg who went so far as to suggest she take drugs and stop eating.
But Kesha is back, and stronger than ever. I admire her courage, her brazen and gutsy take on life, and her ability to take care of her health first before jumping back into her career. She’s performing again and she’s the judge on a new ABC singing competition, Rising Star.
Also, she looked absolutely glamorous in on the red carpet for the 2014 Billboard Music Awards. Ditching the David Bowie-Meets-Gaga look (which I honestly loved, too), she went for a really classy mermaid dress. Of course she topped it off with a perfect pink-gray do, because she’s Kesha and she does what she wants (and looks stellar while doing it).
Here are 11 more reasons why Kesha is one of the most lovable gals in the galaxy:
1. Kesha loves writing
In fact, she wrote a memoir titled My Crazy Beautiful Life and I just ordered it on Amazon. In the description, she writes:
“In less than three years, I’ve gone from being the worst waitress in LA to living out my childhood dreams of singing my songs to people all over the world. Sometimes, it feels as if the last few years have encompassed a few decades. . . . You might have heard my voice on the radio, seen me onstage and on the red carpet, or in a music video, but that’s only a part of the story. In these pages, I’m revealing a more complete picture of what my life is really like. It’s not all glamorous and it’s not all pretty, but it’s all real. . . . I want you to come on a whirlwind journey with an all-access pass to My Crazy Beautiful Life.”
Sign. Me. Up.
2. Her mom is her friend and role model
Kesha’s mom is a songwriter, so when Kesha was younger, she used to spend a lot of time with her in recording studios. Her mom encouraged her to pursue singing; Kesha learned a lot from her mom, who wrote songs for Johnny Cash, Patsy Cline, and Dolly Parton. Also, they have an amazingly awesome relationship: Kesha’s mom dressed up in a penis costume and danced onstage with her daughter. Nothing like mother-daughter bonding time.
3. She’s a genius. Almost literally.
Kesha scored a 1500 on her SATs (when it was out of 1600) and has an IQ of over 140, which actually almost makes her a genius.
4. Kesha is the wisest of them all.
Here are some of my favorite inspirational Kesha quotes:
5. She used to crash college classes.
Because why not? When Kesha was in high-school, she would drive over to Belmont University and listen in on history courses. “I love learning,” Kesha says.
6. Her stellar style
I know Kesha can be gaudy sometimes and bit much, but there is something so cool about her unabashed and rebellious outfits. Unlike Lady Gaga, I truly feel like Kesha just likes dressing up. There are no gimmicks, no games, just pure Kesha.
7. Her infinite love for glitter
Kesha reportedly stated that she wants to paint the world with glitter, and she’s willing to drop a couple thousand dollars to do that. Yup. Kesha spends thousands on glitter, and she has no regrets.
8. She’s collaborated with some really great musicians
Such as Iggy Pop, Wayne Coyne of Flaming Lips, and Patrick Carney from Black Keys. You’ll get to hear some of their influences in her album, Warrior.
9. Her sense of humor
Watch Kesha explain the origin of the dollar sign in her name (it all goes back to a birthday party at Shakey’s!!!) on Funny or Die.
10. She believes in the sexy supernatural
Here, Kesha enlightens us about having an affair with a ghost. Which I think is spooky and AWESOME.
11. Kesha a feminist and she’s proud of it
Kesha has addressed the topic of gender roles and double standards countless times, saying if a man can be crass, drink whiskey, and have sex when he feels like it, then so can she. In songs like “Blah Blah Blah,” Kesha essentially advocates that she just wants to have a good time. This role reversal, as crude as it is (I know, I know, her lyrics are pretty bombastic), is important for women who have been needlessly slut-shamed and looked down upon for their sexuality, whereas men are applauded for it. Kesha states, “I’m a young, responsible woman who can work and party as hard as any man. So, if I want to talk about drinking and sex, I’m going to do it.” She challenges these social taboos in her music and in interviews.
In an interview off Crushable, she states,
“In some ways. In the ways that I feel I can do the same things men can do, and be just as rock ’n’ roll and bad ass and not feel shameful or be shamed for it…If men can talk about drinking in every awesome rock ’n’ roll song and every awesome rap song, why can’t a woman? Just because I drink doesn’t mean I’m a drunk. Just because I have sex, and I’m not embarrassed about it, doesn’t mean I’m a whore. If men can do it, why can’t a woman do it? I really feel one of my main reasons for being on this earth is to level the playing field just a little bit.”
