Miley Cyrus’ ‘Nightmare’ is our new favorite breakup song

After her deeply personal new interview and her artful Paper Magazine cover, Miley’s back to making music.

Her latest track, “Nightmare,” which mysteriously appeared on the Internet this week, kinda has us wishing we could head-bang in slow motion. It also has us wondering whether she’s got an album cooking in the kitchen.

Nevertheless, “Nightmare” is an ideal combination of electronic, pop, and rock, which is a slight departure from her hip-hop influenced Bangerz album (2013). Produced by Dr. Luke (i.e. the producer for Kelly Clarkson’s “Since U Been Gone” and Nicki Minaj’s “The Night Is Still Young”), the song seamlessly combines a synth-heavy chorus with breaks of acoustic guitar strums throughout.

“Nightmare” comes as Miley’s first solo track, post-Bangerz. Since the album’s release, she has kept busy collaborating with Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne and “Tuesday” sensation, ILoveMakonnen.

Whether this is a track that is intended to be included on a future project remains to be seen. But if we’re being totally honest, we don’t care: We’re just glad to hear it!

Give “Nightmare” a listen yourself, below.

We must warn you, it is addictive…and a damn good breakup song. With lyrics like, “I’m still trying to wake up from this / From this nightmare / But you’re not there,” she perfectly nails that weird, impossible-to-grasp feeling after it’s all over.

It’s powerful and has enough pop sensibility to usher anyone over the hump of post-breakup hell. Thanks, M!
