Miley Cyrus goes on Jimmy Kimmel, gets real about nipples
Disney-star-turned-pop-badass Miley Cyrus has always been vocal about the #FreeTheNipple campaign ever since posting a series of topless photos (NSFW!) on her Instagram. The campaign, which can be found all over social media, works to combat the stigma against female body parts by highlighting just how unfair it is that women’s nipples are censored and abhorred, while men can walk around topless without any judgement. Miley echoed these sentiments when she appeared on ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Wednesday.
She emerged on set in a truly Miley get-up—a rad sparkly sequin pantsuit, minus the shirt. Instead, she wore two sparkly nipple pasties on her breasts, which obviously sparked a pretty good conversation.
“Humans aren’t afraid of the human breast,” she said. “It’s the nipple that’s the issue.” This, clearly, doesn’t make any sense.
“I’m showing my boobs and no one has a problem,” she continued. “But the nipples are covered so somehow that’s okay.”
Yet, has anyone seen a man cover just his nipples? This double standard has truly been the crux of the #FreeTheNipple campaign: why can men show their nipples but women can’t? What’s so offensive about a woman’s nipples when everyone has them? As Miley puts it: “[It’s] insane because the nipple, what you can’t show, everyone has, but the jug part that everyone doesn’t—you’re allowed to show under-boob. I’ve never understood the way that works.”
It is confounding, for sure.
But back to Miley’s outfit. Kimmel wanted to know how her dad (Billy Ray, obvs) feels about her fashion choices—particularly the nearly topless ones.
“My dad’s cool because I’m sure he’d maybe rather not have me have my tits out all the time, but he’d rather me have my tits out and be a good person than have a shirt on and be a bitch,” she said. Solid answer.
