The reason why Miley Cyrus’ homeless VMA date is selling his Moonman will make you cry
The 2016 MTV Video Music Awards JUST happened (last Sunday night), and we couldn’t help but miss the presence of Miley Cyrus. The musician and activist famously hosted last year’s show and became the unexpected star of the 2014 show — for her attire, performance, AND her acceptance speech. When Miley won the award for Video of the Year for “Wrecking Ball,” she had her date, a homeless man named Jesse Helt, accept the award on her behalf, and he gave a touching speech about homeless youth in America.
In his minute-long speech, Helt said:
“Thank you all – my name is Jesse, and I am accepting this award on behalf of the 1.6 million runaways and homeless youth in the United States, who are starving, lost and scared, for their lives right now. I know this because I am one of these people. I’ve survived in shelters all over. … Though I may have been invisible to you in the streets, I have a lot of the same dreams as many of you.”

Now, two years later, TMZ is reporting that Helt is auctioning the Moonman he won with Miley on eBay for $10,000 (or there’s the Buy it Now option for $15,000). The reason he’s selling it is absolutely heartwarming. TMZ reports he’s expecting a baby in a few months and will use the funds to prepare for his new bundle of joy.
According to Helt’s eBay listing, the trophy is in “mint condition,” is “very rare one of a kind,” and contains “no fingerprints.” The Moonman has both Helt’s and Cyrus’ name engraved in it and is a pretty iconic piece of pop culture memorabilia.

We get that it’s a bit untraditional to be selling an entertainment award on Ebay — but when a new addition to your family is coming, every dollar helps! Here’s hoping that all is well for Helt during this exciting time in his life.
