Miley Cyrus is having a moment—and she totally deserves it
It hasn’t always been easy to love Miley Cyrus. Even though her 2013 album Bangerz produced some killer songs (“Wrecking Ball” and “We Can’t Stop”), it was hard to fully get behind her as an artist with songs that glorified hard drug use and performances in which she seemed to both objectify herself and treat women of color like props instead of people. Between culturally appropriating twerking and cracking deeply unfunny rape jokes and just having her tongue out all of the time, it was hard to enjoy Miley. It was, honestly, much easier to worry about her. She seemed like an out-of-control child star having some challenges transitioning into adulthood. And, as anyone who has read a tabloid ever knows, the post-child-stardom downward spiral is a real phenomenon and the direction of this particular spiral rarely reverses itself.
But that doesn’t seem to be the way for Miley. She seems to have not only stopped her tongue-wagging crazy-slide, but over the past couple of months, she’s actually been radically awesome, reminding us why we loved her in the first place.
Let’s start where it all kind of began, with the VMAs. Whereas in 2013, she used the VMA’s to showcase her tongue and her twerk, she used the 2014 VMA’s to spread awareness about homeless youth.
She also looks AMAZING. This weekend, she showed up to Elton John’s AIDS Foundation Oscar party in literally the most awesome pair of pants that have ever been stitched. Look above and marvel at their magic and mystery. The last thing I would ever do is shame Miley for her VMA teddy bear onesie (the last thing I would ever do is shame anyone for anything they wear EVER), however, when you pick out your clothes, you are sending a message, you’re telling the world how you want us to look at you. The teddy bear onesie says one thing. These power pants, that are equal parts quirk-adorbs and fierce as f***, say QUITE another thing. This is a girl who knows her own strength and work and has an incredible sense of humor to go along with the muscle she wields in the world.

It was PERFECTION. Miley being the best version of Miley and it was a wonder to behold. That growl, that croon, and, again, those paaaaants. Miley Cyrus wears pants like a queen wears a crown and that is a fact.

And we love what she’s been throwing down in interviews lately too. In a PopSugar interview with Miley last month the girl had the most gorgeous things to say about beauty:
“I think of the formula of what’s supposed to be ‘pretty’ and what a woman is supposed to be is something I think I accepted more when I was younger, and now that I’m older I think ‘Forget that. Like, I don’t want to be like that.’ “
