Miley Cyrus pulled a Beyoncé and dropped a surprise album during the VMAs

Last night’s VMAs was certainly one for the books. Nicki Minaj and Taylor Swift resolved their bad blood on stage, Kanye announced his run for president in 2020, and, oh yeah, Miley Cyrus dropped her newest album.

Called Miley Cyrus and Her Dead Petz, the former Disney star’s newest album is currently streaming on Soundcloud for free after she performed her new song, “Dooo It!” on stage to close out the awards. Featuring songs like “I’m So Drunk” and “Slab of Butter,” it’s clear that this album is the truest, kookiest expression of Miley as we know her now. That’s a little wild, a little jarring, and a lotta unpredictable.

In an interview with the New York Times, Miley explained that the album cost $50,000 to make, and wasn’t revealed to her record company until it was finished. Heavily influenced by the loss of her dog, Floyd, Miley channelled her sorrow into art (with the help of Flaming Lips collaborator Wayne Coyne). What she made is a trippy, other-worldly sound that’s worth listening to over and over again.

For Miley, this is just one of her many reinventions:

Which isn’t surprising. We’ve seen Miley go from long-locked Hannah Montana to bleach-blonde tomboy to topless and covered in glitter. Now, she identifies as more of “homebody.” She’s not here to ruffle any feathers.

“This music was not meant to be a rebellion,” she explains. “It was meant to be a gift.”

And we thank you for it, Miley!
