Michelle Rodriguez will probably return to the “Fast and Furious” franchise, but she still needs it to do better by women

We’ve long admired Michelle Rodriguez, and even more so after she spoke about the Fast and Furious franchise’s treatment of women. Despite being a fav in the Fast and Furious movies, Rodriguez recently shared an impassioned Instagram post that many fans interpreted as her announcing her departure from the series.

The caption definitely reads as if she’s saying goodbye to the franchise.

Because, like, she literally says she might bid adieu if things don’t change

"F8 is out digitally today, I hope they decide to show some love to the women of the franchise on the next one. Or I just might have to say goodbye to a loved franchise."

Luckily, when talking to The Hollywood Reporter, Rodriguez made it clear that she probably won’t leave (yet). She just wishes the writers and producers would think more about how they’re portraying women and their relationships.

"We always see the guys talking, we know what they’re thinking and we know their relationships, but I can count with one hand in eight movies how many times the women talk to each other. So it’s, ‘Who are they, what are they about, and do you care?’ I just brought up a question, and if that doesn’t get answered and as I start on this path [of more dramatic roles], I just wonder if our paths meet at all.

When asked directly if she was leaving, she said she thought Vin Diesel would be able to convince her to stay. And since her ask is relatively small, not to mention super important, we really hope he will convince her — and that her ask is met.

Fast and Furious has a massive fan base, and we’re grateful Rodriguez is speaking out for the women that are part of it and the women who love it.

"Yes, you’re there to entertain people, but when you’re on that scale you also have a responsibility. I won’t accept anything else, and Vin won’t accept anything else. He knows, he gets it.

Accordingly, we’re looking forward to new, improved, more feminist Fast and Furious films in the future!
