Michelle Obama Is Launching a “Vulnerable” New Podcast—Here’s How to Listen
Listen in on her most candid conversations.
Finally, some good news: Michelle Obama is a podcaster now! Spotify and Higher Ground Productions, Michelle and Barack Obama’s production company, announced in a press release to HelloGiggles that The Michelle Obama Podcast will be premiering on July 29th, exclusively on Spotify.
“Hosted by Michelle Obama, the series will bring listeners the former First Lady’s most candid and personal conversations, showing us what’s possible when we allow ourselves to be vulnerable, to open up, and to focus on what matters most,” the press release reads.
This is the first release from a multiyear deal between Higher Ground Productions and Spotify, which Mom and Dad (sorry, Michelle and Barack) signed in 2019. According to Variety, the deal has the former first couple “set to develop, produce, and lend their voices to select podcasts on a wide range of topics.”
The first of those wide-ranging topics, according to the podcast’s press release, will be “the relationships that shape us, from siblings and close friends to partners, parents, and mentors to our relationship with ourselves and our health.”
Obama has a bevy of high-profile guests lined up to join her in these revealing conversations.
Conan O’Brien, her mentor Valerie Jarett, journalist Michele Norris, Dr. Sharon Malone MD, and Marian and Craig Robinson, her mother and brother, are all listed as upcoming guests.
“What I love about these conversations is that they’re topics and issues that we’re all dealing with, no matter what’s going on, whether that’s a global pandemic or a nationwide reckoning with race,” Obama says in the podcast’s teaser. “My hope is that this podcast can be a place for us to sort through the questions that we’re all trying to answer. A place to open up and be a little vulnerable. And have some fun along the way.”
We’re not crying, you’re crying!
This is not the Obamas’ first foray into digital contentland. You may recall that the Obamas also signed a multiyear deal with Netflix in 2018, under which they’re producing both scripted and unscripted films and series. Their first produced film, American Factory, won an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature in 2020; and Becoming, their most recent release, is a documentary based off Obama’s bestselling, Grammy Award-winning memoir of the same name. So, yeah, off to a strong start.
