President Obama calls Michelle Obama a great body image role model for their daughters
No doubt the President has learned things we can never even dream of during his time at The White House. But through the women in his life, he’s also gotten an education on a subject near and dear to our hearts: body image.
In a conversation with the ballerina Misty Copeland published in TIME, Barack Obama spoke about his wife, Michelle Obama, and how she’s been such a positive role model for their daughters, Sasha, 14, and Malia, 17.
“I mean when you’re a dad of two daughters you notice more. When I was a kid, I didn’t realize as much . . . the enormous pressure that young women are placed under in terms of looking a certain way,” he said in the interview. He went on to explain how the pressure is even stronger when it comes to young women of color. “I mean, Malia’ll talk about black girls’ hair and will have much opinions of that,” the President continued. “And she’s pretty opinionated about the fact that it costs a lot, it takes a long time, that sometimes girls can be just as tough on each other about how they’re supposed to look.”
The one person who he credits for giving the girls such confidence? The First Lady. “The fact that [Malia and Sasha have] got a tall, gorgeous mom who has some curves, and that their father appreciates, I think is helpful,” Barack Obama said.
However, President continued, pop culture has changed for the better since his own childhood and today youngsters have more diverse representations of beauty. He said:
We couldn’t agree more.
