Michelle Obama gives the backstory for her side-eye at Trump’s inauguration

Remember when Michelle Obama gave some serious side-eye on Trump’s inauguration day? Of course you do. The images were all over social media because people everywhere completely related to what they imagined FLOTUS was feeling during those moments. The side-eye was iconic, and now Michelle Obama has explained the actual story behind it.

Contrary to very popular belief, she wasn’t actually side-eyeing Melania Trump’s strangely-timed gift.

The former first lady (FFLOTUS) explained the situation at the American Institute of Architects convention on Monday. And even though it really super looked like she was Jim Halpert-ing the camera (which we were so into), she had other things on her mind.

Here’s FFLOTUS not throwing shade: false false

And here’s what was actually going on: She was thinking about her daughters, Sasha and Malia.

“That moment of transition, right before the doors opened and we welcomed in the new family," Michelle explained, "Our kids were leaving out the back door in tears, saying goodbye to people."

Sasha and Malia grew up in the White House. It was their home for eight of their most formative years. We can’t imagine what it must have felt like for them to leave their home, along with all the people they know and love, behind.

“I didn’t want to have tears in my eyes because people would swear I was crying because of the new president,” Michelle added.

TBH, she’s definitely not wrong about that. The entire day must have been incredibly emotional for the Obama family — and not just because they were being replaced by the Trumps. But as much as we desperately want Michelle to run for president in 2020, it’s just not something she is willing to do — because of her kids.

“I wouldn’t ask my children to do this again,” she said.

As much as we hate it, we get it.
