Michelle Dockery heads to the wild, wild west in the first trailer for Netflix’s “Godless”
Looks like Lady Mary has ridden off into the sunset and a decidedly grittier gal has taken her place. Downton Abbey alum Michelle Dockery has traded in her sensible Edwardian slippers for a pair of cowboy boots in the new trailer for Netflix’s upcoming Western series, Godless. (Okay, fine, we can’t actually see her shoes, but our money’s on boots to go with the whole outlaw vibe.)
Dockery will join Jeff Daniels and fellow Brit Jack O’Connell (Unbroken) for the limited series that centers on criminal Frank Griffin (Daniels) and his gang as they seek revenge against a man named Roy Goode (O’Connell). Dockery, who plays widow Alice Fletcher, shows up when Goode hides out in her New Mexico mining town. The town appears to be run mostly by women, which is a pleasant surprise given the era in which the show takes place.
From what we can tell from the eerie trailer and the foreboding title, Godless has its wild, wild West bases covered. There are overturned wagons, gunfights, galloping horse, sweeping views, speeding locomotives, and, of course, the lonely chime of a high noon-style bell. In other words, all the good stuff.

Dockery’s been keeping busy in more contemporary projects since her Downton days, appearing in TNT’s Good Behavior and even making a cameo on Angie Tribeca. (She’ll also surely be featured, though not necessarily in person, in the upcoming Downtown Abbey: The Exhibition when it opens in New York City next month.) With Godless, she’s back to her period drama roots. Oscar-winning director and producer Stephen Soderbergh is executive producing the new series, along with writer Scott Frank (Wolverine, Logan) and fellow executive producer Casey Silver.
All seven episodes of Godless will drop on Netflix on Nov. 22nd, so ready your 10-gallon hats.
