Michelle Branch just teased her first new music in YEARS, and it’s glorious
After YEARS of waiting, Michelle Branch has teased her first taste of new music and it’s absolutely glorious.
Rumors that Branch *might* be working on new music began to fly last summer, something that was later confirmed by the singer herself. Indeed, last month (January 6th), Branch said that her FIRST ALBUM IN 14 YEARS would be coming out this April. Essentially all our early ’00s dreams were coming true.
Titled Hopeless Romantic, Michelle Branch revealed that the album would be out on April 7th(!), and that it had been produced with her new beau, The Black Keys’ Patrick Carney.
Well, now we’ve got the first taste of Michelle Branch’s new music, and it’s giving us chills.
While the song holds some elements from Branch’s two previous albums, Hotel Paper and The Spirit Room, the new track bears some of the hallmarks of The Black Keys’ heavier production. Indeed, the track sounds a bit like some of Lana Del Rey’s Ultraviolence, which was, coincidentally, a collaboration with Black Keys guitarist and vocalist Dan Auerbach.

What’s more, Branch took to social media to confirm that the song, the title track from her upcoming album, would be available this Friday, February 3rd.
Speaking about the album, Branch said that work actually began all the way back in 2012 when she wrote a song called “The City.”
"I was nearing my 30th birthday and I thought, ‘Something needs to change in my life,'" he said. "I felt stagnant in this weird holding pattern, but I never acknowledged it to myself until I wrote that song. A lot of huge things happened to me really young. I got signed at 17 and released my first album a month after I turned 18. I met my ex-husband when I was 19, got married at 20, and had a baby at 21. ‘The City’ was a song about me realizing that I wanted to make a change. It was one of the first things I wrote that felt really honest and it was kind of an ‘A-ha’ moment for me. Once I sang it, I thought, ‘Oh, here we go.’
Branch said that while her earlier material was written without much experience, her new album Hopeless Romantic was borne from her life, which has seen her re-enter the dating pool following her divorce in 2015.
“This album is about adult, messy love and not teenage love,” she explained. “It’s been a couple of really interesting years. I mean, the last time I dated I was a teenager!”
Tbh, we can’t wait to hear what else Michelle Branch has been cooking up in the studio, and we’ll totally be adding “Hopeless Romantic” to our playlists when it’s released on Friday.
