Merriam-Webster just proved it’s the perfect LGBTQ+ ally with this hilariously shady tweet
Whoever is running the social media for Merriam-Webster needs a medal. The famous authority on the English language has been getting a lot of attention lately, and not for their work making dictionaries or thesauruses.
The Twitter account for the publishing company has become one of the best places on the web to find hilariously shady tweets, often directed at trolls that don’t know any better.
And their latest online clapback has proven just how awesome Merriam-Webster's social media is for supporting the LGBTQ+ community.
The centuries-old publishing company has been doing a lot lately to show their allyship for the for the queer community online. Using what they know best (the power of language), the dictionary company has been able to show us exactly why words and language are so important.
They've been dedicated to adding terms that hold power for the queer community, which is an incredible step to take, as this often helps to legitimize and give power to that community. But most importantly, Merriam-Webster credits the "evolution of culture" for pushing them in that direction.
People keep
1) saying they don't know what 'genderqueer' meansthen
2) asking why we added it to the dictionary pic.twitter.com/wsGZ7Y6XB8

Of course, there’s been pushback from online trolls and people who just don’t understand the significance of this work. But the Merriam-Webster Twitter account has been able to hilariously shut down negativity that springs up.
After all, this was their response after someone trolled them about a tweet wanting to add "sapiosexual" to the dictionary:
