This mermaid hair-coloring process is insanely gorgeous
Let’s get one thing straight: We love our Disney princesses, and they give us all our hair goals. We are so obsessed with their hair that even we’ve started wondering how they would look with short hair, iconic haircuts, and just realistic hair in general. But underneath it all, we are all still drooling over these animated ladies’ originally perfectly coiffed manes.
Well our time has come, my friends – especially for those of us who covet Ariel’s beautiful mermaid hair. Because Fluid Hair Painting (aka the creation of mermaid hair) is now a thing, and it’s absolutely stunning.
Similar to balayage but a bit more controlled (and also often less severe-looking than highlights can be), Fluid Hair Painting is the brainchild of KL Christoffsen (@mermicornhair on Instagram), a stylist who owns and works out of the Cheeky Strut salon in Grand Rapids, Mich. It involves, quite literally, painting sections of hair by hand to create a soft, gradient effect that can be achieved using any combination of colors.
“Because the hair is over directed during the application process, it collapses into a fluid color gradient when styled,” Christoffsen told BuzzFeed of the trend’s moniker.
And best of all for us lazy/nap-loving people? You get to lie down while it happens. SIGN ME UP.
“Instead of the client sitting up (as in traditional balayage), we have them reclined in a chair with their head resting on the edge of a color table,” Christoffsen told Modern Salon about the Fluid Hair Painting process. Because their hair is fanned out, it gives me the ability to thoroughly look over every strand to see how the color melts from top to bottom. Plus, no matter how the client parts their hair you’re able to give them a tailored, multidimensional color because you can visually see how everything will collapse together.”
I don’t know about you guys, but going to sleep and waking up looking like a mermaid is in my top five life goals.
