This ‘Men in Black’ themed airline safety video is a perfect 90s flashback

Let’s take a little mental time machine trip back to 1997. George Clooney was Batman, Matt Damon was good Will Hunting and we were all losing our minds over Titanic. It was a big year for pop culture, and two of the biggest standouts in 1997 pop culture were Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones, the original guardians of the galaxy. Yes, I’m talking about the summer of Men in Black. I loved that movie. You loved that movie. We all loved that movie.

So, you can imagine the Internet’s collective excitement when Air New Zealand released a new in-flight safety video that’s totally MIB-themed. The video is a collaboration with New Zealand’s national rugby team, the All Blacks. It features members of the team and other rugby stars as special agents, rapping with a chorus of ultra-cool backup dancers.

Unfortunately, there are no surprise appearances from Will Smith or Tommy Lee Jones. But the video does feature the real MIB theme song and Aussie accents aplenty. Oh, and there’s a talking pug (because of course there is). He even sings.

“At Air New Zealand, we’re #CrazyAboutRugby,” the airline says on their YouTube page. “So for our latest inflight safety video, we called upon some very special Men In Black to brief our passengers.”

The great thing about this video is that it takes something we all usually tune out (air travel safety instructions) and makes them engaging and entertaining. I don’t know about you guys, but I’m much more likely to remember important safety information and instructions when it’s, say, stuck in my head to the tune of the MIB theme.

This isn’t Air New Zealand’s first foray into creative in-flight videos. Last year, they created a fantastically epic Lord of the Rings-themed safety video, complete with a cameo from Elijah Wood. They even have a safety video that’s basically one big Richard Simmons dance party!

May I suggest a Space Jam-themed safety video next?
