There’s good news and bad news about Melissa McCarthy returning to “Gilmore Girls”
The good news: All of Stars Hollow is standing in the gazebo, waiting for Melissa McCarthy to return with open arms, should she find time to stop by Netflix’s Gilmore Girls revival.
The bad news: She just might be too busy, friends.
With the show officially a go on the streaming site, everything is starting to nicely line up to bring the old GG gang back together. Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel are 100% involved, along with Scott Patterson, Kelly Bishop, and Sean Gunn. It’s rumored that Rory’s old flames will return, too. Through all of this, McCarthy’s name has been mentioned, with a big question mark right next to it.
Talking to TVLine, series creator (and returning showrunner, FTW), Amy Sherman-Palladino, mentioned that if McCarthy wants to show up for an episode, or even 30 seconds, the show is willing to drop everything and squeeze her in.
“The thing I have said [to her team] is, ‘Look, if Melissa is available and has an afternoon free, I’ll write her a scene. Melissa was one of us,” Sherman-Palladino explained. “If she has a spare moment to run over [to the set] — even if for just a cameo — we would be totally game. And if it’s a last-minute thing, I would write her in and we would figure it out. That’s the way we left it.”
Sherman-Palladino also told TVLine that right now, there is no storyline for Sookie St. James in the Gilmore Girls revival.
“[She] was a character we knew we could not count on in terms of story, because [Melissa] just simply wouldn’t have that sort of time to carve out for us,” Sherman-Palladino continued. “I would just be sobbing in a corner for six months. That would be my whole life. But if her people called me up and said she’s free on these particular days or would love to drop by and just be in one scene, we would put her right in.”
So as of right now, no, McCarthy is not in the Gilmore Girls revival. BUT THAT COULD CHANGE AT ANY SECOND. Stay tuned. We’ll be waiting (and eventually watching).
