Melinda Gates carries 5 gallons of water on her head to celebrate the powerful women of Malawi
Melinda and Bill Gates AKA the wealthiest couple on planet Earth, are famous for their philanthropy. The two are constantly finding ways to use their power and influence for good. On a recent trip to Malawi, Melinda Gates used her high-profile status to show the Herculean strength it takes to be a woman in the kind of village she visited. In an Instagram picture that has now gone viral, Gates carries 20 liters (about 5 gallons) of water on her head.
This sounds HEAVY as HECK (and it IS), but to put things in perspective, Gates is walking alongside women who shoulder much heavier burdens on a daily basis.
“During my stay with the Gawanini family in Malawi, I joined the women collecting drinking water,” Gates explained in the Insta caption. “I carried 20 liters and it was tough. Meanwhile, Chrissy (middle) is carrying about 40 liters. Many women do this every day.”
In another Instagram snap, Gates is shown washing dishes with one of the women of the village:
“Helping wash the dishes during my homestay in Malawi,” Gates explained in the caption for this pic. “Women spend much of the day cooking and then cleaning up. It’s a reminder that it’s a lot more time consuming to do dishes when you can’t just turn on a faucet.”
We love how Gates used her platform to not only raise awareness about the conditions the women of this village live in, but to celebrate these women for their strength and praise them for all that they accomplish on a daily basis. Thank you, Melinda Gates, for turning your spotlight on these women so we can give them the celebration they deserve.
