Meghan Markle Had the Most Relatable Reaction to *That* Beyonce and Jay-Z Shout-Out

It was a very millennial response.

Here’s a take: The day Meghan Markle became a royal wasn’t on the day of her wedding to Prince Harry. It was on the day Beyoncé and Jay-Z gave her a public shout-out, essentially anointing Markle as our very own American princess (which she’ll always be, official title or not). But now, we know how Markle herself responded to her crowning moment as Bey and Jay’s queen.

In case you need a quick refresher on that beautiful pop culture moment, this happened when Beyoncé and Jay-Z shared a video of themselves accepting their Brit Award for Best International Group while standing in front of illustrator Tim O’Brien’s Mona-Lisa-esque portrait of Markle.

Beyoncé later shared a still from the video on her Instagram, referencing Markle directly in her caption: “In honor of Black History Month, we bow down to one of our Melanated Monas,” she wrote. “Congrats on your pregnancy! We wish you so much joy.”

So, we already know how we reacted to seeing this post—with swelling hearts and hope for the future—but we’ve just learned how Markle herself responded.

Markle was on her way back from her star-studded baby shower in New York, where she celebrated her pregnancy among her good friend Serena Williams, when she found out about the post. Town & Country reports that according to Finding Freedom, the new biography about the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Markle’s makeup artist and friend, Daniel Martin, sent her a text of the homage video. “I think all I wrote was ‘Girl,'” Martin said about sharing the news, according to the biography.

Here’s how Markle responded, according to Martin: “She wrote me back, like, the big-eye emoji,” she said, and we love her very millennial response.

Now, if it were us finding out we had received personal words of encouragement from The Carters, we likely would have screamed, cried, or fainted (perhaps all three at the same time) but Markle’s no-words response was perfectly on-brand for her.
