How an engagement between Meghan Markle and Prince Harry could change the British monarchy

As an American actress and divorcee, Meghan Markle is probably not the most obvious candidate to be Britain’s next princess. However, considering how serious her relationship with Prince Harry has become, royal-watchers now say that a marriage between she and Harry is likely a matter of “when” and not “if.”

If Meghan does eventually walk down the aisle at Westminster Abbey and become a member of the British monarchy, she may end up bringing about some much-needed change to the institution, similar to the way Kate and William have in their own way. Here are some ways an engagement between Meghan Markle and Prince Harry could royally change things.

1Meghan could overshadow the rest of the royal family

Unlike Kate Middleton, who dated Prince William for eight years before getting engaged, Meghan Markle’s romance has been a whirlwind in comparison. Throw in the fact that she is an American, an actress, and from humble roots, and you’ve essentially got a modern day Cinderella story (of sorts).

2Meghan might continue her career as an actress

When American actress Grace Kelly married into the royal family of Monaco, she was forced to give up her acting career and devote herself full-time to her royal family responsibilities. However, things have changed a lot since the 1950s, and nowadays, royal women like Sophie, Countess of Wessex have kept their jobs, despite being married to a prince. So it’s possible that Meghan might continue to act in television and movies.

3Meghan may break royal protocol by speaking out on issues

Meghan has already given a major UN Women speech and expressed her views on British politics. As a feminist and philanthropist, we doubt that she would stop voicing her thoughts on subjects that mattered to her just because she got married.

4Meghan might break the royal reputation for having a stiff upper lip

It’s rare for the royal family to ever express emotion or talk intimately about their personal lives, although Kate and William have begun to break this tradition a bit. It’s very possible that Meghan Markle would continue to buck the “stiff upper lip” trend, since she has showed no qualms about speaking openly about her romance with Prince Harry.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, Meghan said, “We’re a couple…We’re in love. I’m sure there will be a time when we will have to come forward and present ourselves and have stories to tell, but I hope what people will understand is that this is our time. This is for us. It’s part of what makes it so special, that it’s just ours. But we’re happy. Personally, I love a great love story.”

Some say that Meghan’s attitude has even rubbed off on Prince Harry and has helped him open up more in interviews, too. All the better for us, because we love to hear what both of these good humans have to say.
