Meghan Markle’s dad revealed what she said when he told her he wouldn’t be coming to the wedding

If you followed the royal wedding coverage as closely as we did, then you know that Meghan Markle’s dad pulled out of walking his daughter down the aisle days before her wedding to Prince Harry. Now, after weeks of speculation, Thomas Markle has shared his side of the story, including how Meghan reacted when she found out he wouldn’t be attending one of the most significant days of her life.
In an interview with the U.K.’s Good Morning Britain early Monday, June 18th, the 74-year-old revealed that Meghan was emotional when he made the call, adding that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were disappointed he couldn’t be there, but very understanding.
"Meghan cried, I’m sure — she did cry — and they both said, 'Take care of yourself, we are really worried about you.' They said the important thing is that I get better," he said. "The unfortunate thing now is that I'm a footnote in one of the greatest moments in history instead of a dad walking his daughter down the aisle. It was a very emotional moment. I regretted it because I really wanted to walk her down the aisle. But I'm thankful for how it all went."

The days leading up to the royal wedding were filled with a few turbulent moments for Meghan. Two days before the nuptials, Kensington Palace issued a statement on Meghan’s behalf confirming that Thomas would not be walking her down the aisle because of an unexpected surgery. In the end, Meghan walked down the first part of the aisle on her own — which was totally historic and feminist AF — before she was joined by Prince Charles.
"Watching it was difficult for me because I wasn't there, but at the same time...I couldn't have been more proud," Thomas added. "How can I ask for a better replacement than Charles? I was thrilled to tears that he was doing that for me. I just wish it had been my hand holding my daughter, not his. But he was wonderful to them."
The important thing is that Meghan and Harry’s day was filled with love and happiness. It was a historic moment we’re sure they’ll never forget (despite the minor pre-wedding drama).
