Meghan Markle accidentally sat cross-legged at a royal event, expertly transformed it into the “Duchess Slant”

Meghan Markle has had to learn quite a few things about being a duchess over the past few months, not least of them being how to properly sit at royal functions. While attending an event at Buckingham Palace on Tuesday, June 26th, Markle accidentally crossed her legs after sitting down— which is technically a major faux pas in royal etiquette.

But worry not, because she seamlessly fixed the situation by turning her crossed legs into the “Duchess Slant” (for those unfamiliar, the “Duchess Slant” is a signature royal pose in which a lady keeps her knees together and then slants her legs, creating the perfect pose for photo ops while wearing a skirt).

Myka Meier, a royal etiquette expert, told People.com that “typically the ‘Duchess Slant’ is used when a lady has to sit for an extended amount of time while keeping poise and posture.”

"It is the perfect pose for when a camera is shooting directly in front of you because by slightly slanting the knees to create a zig-zag effect when wearing a dress or skirt, your legs are angled so that the camera only shoots the sides of your legs and protects your modesty," she explained.

During this particular event, Markle, Prince Harry, and Queen Elizabeth took a group picture with guests, and Markle crossed her legs as soon as she sat down. The “mistake” was caught on camera, but look at how discreetly she rectifies the situation:

So much poise, right? If you ask us, Markle is doing an amazing job in her new royal role, and we can’t wait to see all the incredible things she does with her new platform.
