Meet Merlin, your newest Internet cat obsession

The Internet is a wondrous thing. It’s full of vitally important information. It helps connect us to people all across the world. And, of course, it’s a source of endless entertainment, mostly in the form of funny and adorable animal videos on YouTube. And as amazing as all cute animal videos are, the cat video has reigned supreme since, well, basically the Dawn of the Internet.

Get ready to meet your newest Internet cat obsession, Merlin. Merlin isn’t just famous for run of the mill cat cuteness. No, he’s a bona fide record holder. Merlin recently made it into the Guinness Book of World Records for the loudest purr by a domestic cat. His purr is 67.8 decibels. If you need some context, that’s louder than conversation in a restaurant and just barely quieter than a car going 65 miles per hour or a running vacuum.

Merlin’s purr is impressively loud. Good luck napping through that. Listen for yourself.

“If he’s cleaning he gets louder, and sometimes if the telephone rings I do get people asking me what’s that noise in the background,” Merlin’s owner, Tracy Westwood told Guinness. “I tell them it’s the cat, but I don’t know if they believe me.”

Is it too corny to call Merlin’s purr magical? Probably, but I’m going to say it anyway: Merlin’s purr is magical.
