This medium rare chicken “recipe” is going viral, and please never attempt this at home

In today’s installment of Weird Things on the Internet, we learn, via Delish, that a medium rare chicken “recipe” is going viral. Oh, my god. Oh, my god. Oh, my god. So gross. But, thankfully, as the quotation marks might suggest, the poster of the original “recipe” wasn’t actually serious and does not encourage the consumption of un-cooked chicken (there really are SO many other ways to eat chicken, people). Phew.

It all started on January 6th when an innocent Australian civilian posted on Facebook about her desire to eat cleaner in 2017, specifically with medium rare chicken strips. She announced:

Just made chicken medium rare chicken strips. They're so good can't believe ive neever tried it like this before. Can't wait to dig into this with my homemade salad and veges. #healthy #newyearsresolution #clean #cleaneating

She also shared the following photo:

Yuck. Yuck. Yuck.

Some of her friends were concerned — someone commented, “Salmonella poisoning dude!!!! Plus it’s the flesh of another animal

?” — until they realized she was joking. A few days later, Gibbs finally confirmed she was just trolling. She replied to a comment on the 9th, “How is it not obvious it’s a joke hahahahaa”.

Upon realizing that her post (which has now been featured on The Daily Mail, Mashable, and Cosmopolitan among others) went viral, Gibbs posted:

Lolol. At least she has a sense of humor about it.

As Delish adds, eating medium rare chicken is actually a thing in Japan. The dish is called chicken tataki and is chicken that is “seared over hot coals and served mostly raw.” They reportedly only use chickens from specific, hygienic local farms. And Esquire said in 2011 that eating chicken pink is on par with consuming “supermarket cold cuts, potato salad at a steamy August cookout, or any food while vacationing in Mexico.” Idk. We still prefer our chicken fully cooked, thank you.

We said it in the headline, but we will say it once again: PLEASE do not try this at home. Sigh.
