McDonalds is bringing virtual reality to their Happy Meals

When we were kids, we were happy to just get a wind-up toy in our Happy Meals, but McDonalds in Sweden is taking their toys to a whole new level. In fact, a whole new reality: virtual reality.

On the weekends of March 5 and March 14, 14 chains in Sweden will offer Happy Meal boxes that can be reconstructed into virtual reality goggles, dubbed “Happy Goggles.” Adweek reports that customers will simply be able to insert their iPhones into the designated slot in the goggles to view and play a ski-themed VR game, “Slope Stars,” debuting just in time for the Swedish holiday “Sportlov,” during which families flock to the mountains to get their ski on.

This video breaks it all down:

Not only does this promotion bring Happy Meals into the digital age, but McDonalds also hopes this will make for a much more communal experience, with families trying out the goggles together and interacting more than they would with small toys that could end up just getting thrown away.

Unfortunately, this promotion is only available in Sweden, but someday soon we hope it makes its way to McDonalds everywhere, finally giving us a reason to have our phones at the dinner table.
