Maya Rudolph whipped out her Beyoncé impression (and some major wisdom) for grads
Graduates of Tulane University were treated to a really amazing commencement speech over the weekend by none other than Maya Rudolph herself. And while the speech itself was flawless, we are delighted that the SNL alumna and all-around comedic badass broke out her signature Beyoncé impression for the occasion.
During her speech, Rudolph channeled Queen Bey to perform an inspiring and hilarious version of The Star Spangled Banner, incorporating lyrics from Beyoncé’s songs and a few other ditties. Real talk: Maya Rudolph has some pipes on her!
Rudolph didn’t just nail each note, she nailed the whole speech. She talked about how she didn’t know what she was doing with her life when she graduated college, and how it took her some time to admit to herself that she wanted to be a performer. But an improv class taught her a valuable lesson. She states:
“At the Groundlings Theatre in Los Angeles, I studied improvisation. And in improvisation there is one hard and fast rule, and that rule is known as “Yes And.” The term YES AND: to say yes, and not just yes, but to add information. In the adding of information you don’t negate the other persons idea – but you build on it.”
“So if I must give any of you advice it would be Say Yes. Say Yes, And… and create your own destiny. So hold on to your old friends. Kiss your Mama. Admit what your dreams are. Don’t beat yourself up if you don’t know what you’re gonna do tomorrow. But work hard and don’t be lazy. And put away your damn phone once in a while.”
