A Maya Angelou full length documentary is coming to PBS next month so mark your calendars now

We are so ready for this. Next month, the feature documentary American Masters – Maya Angelou: And Still I Rise premieres on PBS. The premiere is timed to coincide with Black History Month — and let’s face it, we can all use a little of Dr. Angelou’s wisdom right about now. Angelou passed away in 2014, but her legacy lives on in her writing and final projects. These included a hip hop album called Caged Bird Songs, produced by RoccStarr, with vocals from Angelou. American Masters – Maya Angelou: And Still I Rise features some of the icon’s final interviews, recorded shortly before her death. We can’t wait to hear more of her inspiring words.

A long-awaited premiere

The PBS premiere is the documentary’s first nationwide broadcast after its success on the festival circuit last year. Maya Angelou: And Still I Rise featured at the Sundance Film Festival, AFI Docs, Full Frame, Doc Soup Toronto and the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam, among others. The documentary won 17 awards across three continents.

A fitting tribute

Maya Angelou: And Still I Rise is the first film about the icon’s life. It took four years for filmmakers Rita Coburn Whack and Bob Hercules to bring the documentary together. The film includes appearances from Oprah Winfrey, Alfre Woodard, Cicely Tyson, Louis Gossett Jr., and Hillary and Bill Clinton. If the trailer is anything to go by, you can probably expect to shed a few tears as they pay tribute to Angelou. So… Kleenex at the ready.

In her own words

We’re so glad that Angelou’s own voice has such a strong place in this documentary. We’ve been thinking about her beautiful words a lot lately — and we’re not the only ones.

Until February 21 rolls around, we’ll be over here, re-reading our favorite quotes from the incomparable Dr. Angelou.
