Matthew McConaughey will star in a movie called “The Beach Bum,” and yup, that sounds about right
At this point in his career, we know Matthew McConaughey can do pretty much anything. He transforms himself time and time again into complicated and fascinating roles. But we are getting a sense of happy nostalgia to hear that Matthew McConaughey will star in The Beach Bum.
Despite the fact that he’s won an Oscar, the actor will return to his chilled-out-guy roots in the upcoming movie.
The Beach Bum will be directed and written by the mastermind behind Spring Breakers, Harmony Korine. The movie will be a playful action-comedy. It will follow McConaughey’s character through a series of larger-than-life misadventures.
His character is appropriately named “Moondog.”
Korine is understandably as stoked as the rest of the world to see the renowned actor in the role.
According to Deadline, Korine said, "'The Beach Bum' will be a wild, audacious ride and I can’t think of anyone better than Matthew McConaughey to play our hero Moondog, a rebellious charmer in this fast-paced, uplifiting and irreverent comedy."
Based on that description alone, McConaughey is absolutely perfect for the role. Of course, he totally nails more intense roles like in True Detective or Dallas Buyers Club. But his breakout role in Dazed and Confused was one of the most memorable movie characters of all time.
And his off-screen persona seems to have a pretty similar easy-going swag as his iconic character.
It’ll be awesome to see McConaughey return to something a bit more lighthearted. And Spring Breakers was a visually stunning, super fun film. So we have no doubt that The Beach Bum will deliver on the same level.
Since this announcement has just recently be made, it will be a while before we get to see Moondog in action.
But we have no doubt the movie will be well worth the wait.
