We still can’t process the awesomeness of Matthew McConaughey’s ‘Dazed and Confused’ audition tape
He has an impressive film résumé, abs for days, he’s won the Oscar for Best Actor, and he’s more than proven his Hollywood staying power. But there are three little words (ok, one little word repeated thrice) that will forever come to mind when we think of Matthew McConaughey: “Alright, alright, alright.”
Fortunately for us, a video of his Dazed and Confused audition has surfaced (you know, birth movie of the infamous catch-phrase) which means we can take an even deeper dive into the origins of the character David Wooderson. That’s right: For your viewing pleasure, here’s a young, fresh-faced McConaughey auditioning for the role. It’s so perfect, and oh so ’90s. Please don’t miss the fact that he’s wearing an MTV Headbanger’s Ball t-shirt:
There are SO many amazing things about the tape. His hair, the background, again with the t-shirt. He’s obviously perfect for the part, and with his adorable baby face McConaughey would have been the absolute hottest senior guy on any campus.
Did MM know that being cast in this Richard Linklater future cult-classic would launch his outrageously successful career? Did he know that it would saddle him with a catchphrase for life? Or that women the world over would swoon over his Texas drawl? We’re not sure about any of those questions, but we DO know that two decades later McConaughey shows no signs of abandoning David Wooderson or his “alright, alright, alright” roots.
