We wish we had Mattel’s new gender-inclusive dolls when we were kids

Move over Barbie and Ken. There’s a new doll in Mattel town. The toy brand just released a new line of gender-inclusive dolls that are completely customizable and can be whatever gender a child chooses, if any gender at all. They’re called “Creatable World” dolls, and they’re seriously about to change the way kids play with (and see themselves in) their toys.

There are six different Creatable World dolls, each with a different skin tone. The dolls each have gender-neutral bodies and faces and come with both short- and long-haired wigs, as well as both traditionally feminine, masculine, and gender-neutral clothing.

And no shade to Barbie, but we wish we had Creatable World dolls when we were growing up.

"Toys are a reflection of culture, and as the world continues to celebrate the positive impact of inclusivity, we felt it was time to create a doll line free of labels," Kim Culmone, Senior Vice President of Mattel Fashion Doll Design said in a statement, according to Insider. "Through research, we heard that kids don't want their toys dictated by gender norms. This line allows all kids to express themselves freely which is why it resonates so strongly with them."

“We’re hopeful Creatable World will encourage people to think more broadly about how all kids can benefit from doll play,” Culmone added.

Mattel has been making some serious moves toward becoming a more inclusive and diverse brand. In 2016, the brand introduced a line of Barbies with more diverse body types. And earlier this year, Mattel released a Barbie who uses a wheelchair and a Barbie with a prosthetic leg.

Knowing how much seeing oneself in dolls matters to children, Creatable World dolls will help kids embrace who they want to be and normalize the dissolution of gender stereotypes.

Creatable World dolls will be available for purchase worldwide in the near future. However, they’re currently on sale in the U.S. ($29.99) and U.K. (£34.99) via Amazon. Although we’re a bit too old to be playing with dolls, we may just have to put a Creatable World doll on our holiday wish list.
