Apparently, that Thanksgiving trifle scene on Friends was a LOT grosser than it looked

If you ask any Friends fan what their favorite scene from the show is, you are bound to hear a few come up over and over again. The scene where Ross plays what is supposed to be “Celebration” on the bagpipes for the group is a classic. (Especially the hilarious blooper, which is somehow even better and always makes us laugh.) The scene where Ross barks “pivot!” over and over to Chandler and Rachel while they try to move a couch up a flight of stairs is another great one. Everyone loves the Friends Thanksgiving episodes, especially “The One With the Football.” And of course, there’s the trifle.

All Friends fans already know what we mean when we say “the trifle.” But in case you don’t, here’s a quick recap. In the Season 6 Thanksgiving episode, Rachel is in charge of making the dessert. Naturally, everyone is a bit nervous. Rachel isn’t known for her culinary skills and everyone thinks Monica should have had a backup plan. The trifle turns out a bit strange because the cookbook’s pages were stuck together, causing Rachel to makes a combo of an English trifle and a shepherd’s pie. The joke is that everyone tries to eat it anyway to spare her feelings. It’s totally gross, but of course, Joey likes it.

Well, it turns out that there’s even more to the trifle story. During a recent appearance on The Graham Norton Show, Matt LeBlanc shared a story about the trifle scene. We can’t believe we’ve never heard this before!

LeBlanc said the Friends trifle scene was even grosser than it looked.

The scene took a few takes because everyone was laughing. (David Schwimmer exclaiming, “It tastes like feet!” is one of the funniest things ever, period.) LeBlanc explained that during one of the cuts, Schwimmer spit out some of the trifle back onto the plate. But LeBlanc didn’t notice that Schwimmer had spit some of it out, so when they did another take, he happily chowed down on what turned out to be Schwimmer saliva. Eww.

“[Schwimmer] starts to eat it all, and he can’t finish it, and he starts laughing,” LeBlanc said. “So we cut. And as we’re cutting, he kind of spits it back on his plate. And I’m sitting right next to him, I’m looking the other way, I didn’t see him spit it back on the plate. So I take his plate, I go, ‘Give it to me.’ And I scrape some on my plate. I go, ‘Here, let’s go again.’ We go again, and now, I’m eating it! We finish the take, no one says anything to me.”

Watch Matt LeBlanc tell the full story, including when he found out what had happened, in the clip below.

We didn’t think that Friends scene could get any funnier, but somehow, it just did.

Hilarious and disgusting. We sure love our Friends.
