This is the Ben Affleck role that Matt Damon would not-so-secretly love to play
It’s totally normal to have something completely wonderful happen to your best bud and be over the moon excited for them while also have a little voice in the back of your head go, “Wait, but I want that completely wonderful thing to happen to ME, too!”
Apparently, that little envy elf that lives deep within your brain also hangs out inside the minds of the rich and famous. Case in point, Matt Damon, who is getting tons of love right now for his coming-out-next-week space movie The Martian, recently revealed that, like his BFF Ben Affleck, he too would love to one day play a superhero. And not just any superhero, he wants to play the exact same superhero Affleck played 12 years ago. Yup, that’s right, Damon is hankering to step into the shoes of Matt Murdock AKA Daredevil.
In fact, both Damon and Affleck were up for the role of Daredevil at the time, but, as Damon explained the New York Daily News, it was Affleck’s guts that earned him the role.
“For us it was always Daredevil — that’s the comic we read when we were kids,” says Damon. “But when that one came along (in 2003) I chickened out, because I couldn’t tell. I hadn’t seen the director (Mark Steven Johnson’s) work and I didn’t know. So I just said, ‘No.’ Ben was like, ‘I gotta do it.’”
So Daredevil the movie came and went, and now there’s a Netflix series that has rebooted the character. So has the ship sailed for Damon? Damon has a plan/fantasy about that.
“If Chris Nolan came up to me and said, ‘I want to do Daredevil,’ I would be in.”
Of course, Marvel has basically committed to Daredevil being TV for the time being, and Nolan is in pretty deep with DC Comics, so he’s not going to be tangoing with a Marvel property like Daredevil soon.
That’s okay with Damon. If he can’t be in a blockbuster superhero movie, he would love the chance to DIRECT a blockbuster superhero movie.
“Just putting that out there,” Damon joked to the Daily News.
