Mary-Kate Olsen, queen of goth chic, stepped out smiling and wearing color

Mary-Kate and her sister Ashley Olsen are fashion icons for a reason. They have long blonde hair that they always part down the middle. They rarely smile. And they wear baggy clothes in neutral colors. Business goth, goth chic, the nouveau witch — call it what you will, but we’ve come to expect a certain aesthetic from them and, yes, we are pretty obsessed. These girls are so iconic that they’re credited any time anyone wears black or looks pouty. You can wear a long black cloak and say you’re channeling “Olsen twin vibes.”

So you can understand our shock and awe when we saw Mary-Kate putzing around New York City wearing red and smiling.

Despite our surprise, the girls have been branching outside their sartorial norms lately.

Just last month, the sisters were seen wearing floral gowns.

We were taken aback then, too, but it was because they were bridesmaids in a friend’s wedding. Though we love that Ashley found a way to wear a black floral bridesmaid dress.

It’s hard to make them out in the group of bridesmaids, but that is Ashley behind the bride and Mary-Kate on the far right.

The girls stepped outside their fashion comfort zone for bride Cassie Coane, a luxury watch designer. According to People.com, the bridesmaid aesthetic was anything floral.

What’s next from the fashion duo? Shorts? Crop tops? Tennis shoes, oh my? We’ll have to wait and see.
