Marvel might be adding its first Muslim superhero to the MCU, and we’re so ready for her
With movies like Black Panther and Wonder Woman smashing box office records, superhero movies are no longer exclusively about white male heroes. Marvel Studios, for instance, has finally given a female-led superhero movie the green light with Captain Marvel starring Brie Larson, and rumors of a solo Black Widow movie have fans crossing their fingers. And now, the first Muslim superhero to make the big screen might not be far away, with Marvel saying it has “plans” to introduce Kamala Khan as Ms. Marvel.
In an interview with BBC Arabic, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige hinted at the Muslim hero’s film debut, saying that it is “definitely sort of in the works.” Feige noted that Ms. Marvel was inspired by Carol Danvers’ Captain Marvel, so her first film appearance will likely follow the Captain Marvel movie.
“We have plans for that once we’ve introduced Captain Marvel to the world,” Feige said in a clip from the interview, which was posted to Twitter by user @StaarksHeart.
In her comic book series, Ms. Marvel, aka Kamala Khan, is a 16-year-old Pakistani-American teen from New Jersey. She was the first Muslim hero to headline her own series, which hit shelves in 2014 and is even written by a woman. Kamala took up the Ms. Marvel mantle from her idol, Carol Danvers, in the first volume of her series and has been using her shape-shifting powers to fight bad guys ever since.

Despite Feige’s recent interview, it’s not clear when or how Ms. Marvel might join the ever-expanding MCU. While it’s possible that she’ll be given her own film, she could also be featured in a Captain Marvel sequel or headline a Netflix series. Regardless, we’re crossing our fingers that we’ll see Kamala Khan make her first big screen appearance soon.
