Here’s what you need to know about Marshmallow, the latest tech offering from Android

No, you can’t toast this Marshmallow over the fire, but you can do something even cooler. Android M, M for Marshmallow, is the 6.0 update slated to hit smartphones this fall. Google has been slowly building anticipation for what promises to be an exciting update, announcing the name “Marshmallow” just yesterday.

They’ve also released the third and final software preview for the update, but before you run out and download it, make sure you listen to Google:

Despite the complicated language, this update is all about simplicity. Specifically, this update comes with a new look at permissions that hopefully give users more control over what information their apps can access. The update has also done some work with Android Pay, USB Type-C support as well as small changes to the operating system.

This is a big move for Android, riding on the heels of Google’s latest announcement, while still neck-and-neck with Apple in terms of popularity. With every update, both competitors announce something bigger and better. Can there really only be one?

Here’s the even better news: Rumor has it that Google is working on two new Nexus smartphones to help show off Marshmallow in the shiniest way possible. Like the iPhone competitor, both phones are hopefully going to come equipped with fingerprint scanners. The rest? We’ll just have to wait and see.
