Mark Hamill doesn’t think Luke is “The Last Jedi” and say WHAT

The title of Star Wars: Episode VIII was recently revealed to be “The Last Jedi” and while many of us probably just assumed Luke would be that Jedi, Luke himself  has hinted that in fact might not be the case. And Mark Hamill wouldn’t try to throw us off, right?! Of course, not.

In the opening crawl of The Force Awakens, it appears that Luke is literally referred to as “the last Jedi”, and upon reading this, Mark Hamill has an interesting Last Jedi theory that makes us think twice about our initial assumptions:

In an interview with Uproxx, Hamill mentioned that he’d forgotten about the wording in the scroll but found it to be very interesting:

"When you read The Force Awakens script, the very first words are, 'Luke Skywalker has vanished,'" he explained. "But down later in the crawl, and I can’t quote it exactly, I saw on Twitter [yesterday] morning, 'until Skywalker, the last Jedi, is destroyed.' I thought, 'well, I didn’t know that!' I’ve only seen it twice – [Episode] VII, I mean. And I was wondering why they would use that phrase if it was used that way, because it specifies me. And I think it’s very ambiguous. Is the last Jedi Leia? Is it me?"

Okay, so could “The Last Jedi” in fact be Leia Organa rather than Luke? Or is there another Skywalker we don’t know about yet? Is there another…another? Or is Mark Hamill just trying to send us spinning in a world of new theories and speculation?

Ever since audiences saw Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the most popular theory has been that Rey is in fact the child of Luke. Even though J.J. Abrams has said that Rey’s parents were not in The Force Awakens. But again, Hamill isn’t ruling out Rey either:

"Is it someone we’ve never met before? Or is it Rey? Because she seems to have the Force as well."

Are you confused yet?

Assuming that Abrams was leading us astray and Rey is actually a Skywalker, she could be The Last Jedi. After all, she for sure is able to use the Force. Certainly Rey or Luke as the titular character in “The Last Jedi” makes the most sense. But in the world of Star Wars, secret familial ties aren’t unheard of *cough* Darth Vader *cough*. Maybe Mark Hamill’s “Skywalker” theory isn’t as crazy as it sounds.

Unfortunately, we’ll have to wait until December 15th, 2017, to know for sure. Until then, May The Force Be With You.
