Marina and the Diamonds covered ‘True Colors’ and it’s too beautiful
Marina and the Diamonds has started 2016 with a bang: Just five days into the new year, she’s gifted fans with a gorgeous cover of Cyndi Lauper’s iconic “True Colors,” and it’s the perfect musical marriage of song and cover artist.
According to Nylon, the cover was meant to land on a re-issued version of her third (junior?) album Froot, but Marina instead dropped it for free — issuing the announcement on Instagram, naturally. Whereas Lauper’s cover was of its ’80s moment (synths, glittering, maximalist pop production), Marina’s take on the tune is a lot more subdued. Her voice, which can skew between comical and deadly serious in a second, is all earnest here, which makes sense given the song’s deeper cultural significance.
