Mariah Carey’s Hollywood Walk of Fame star was vandalized, and this is *so* not cool

The new year appears to be off to a rough start for our favorite elusive, perpetually bejeweled chanteuse. As US Weekly reports, someone vandalized Mariah Carey’s Hollywood Walk of Fame star over the weekend. The culprit allegedly added a question mark after the singer’s last name, according to a photo of the star-turned-crime scene that TMZ obtained.

Now, it’s easy to assume that this defacing incident was somehow tied to Carey’s hot mess of a New Year’s Eve performance on Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest, but so far no motive has been uncovered. However, a representative for the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce told the gossip site that they tipped off the authorities after “someone on Instagram claimed responsibility.”

While the question mark was said to be written in ink, it apparently cost $1500 to restore the star to its prior condition, a task that has already been handled by Hollywood Historic Trust. In the meantime, police are scouring surveillance footage to gather more information.

Although Carey feels “mortified” by the NYE performance, we’re hoping that she’s not even more upset by this star situation. Since she received the coveted star on the Walk of Fame back in 2015, she’s had a ton of success to keep her spirits afloat, including a Las Vegas residency and more recently a reality TV show on E! and an upcoming 35-date tour with fellow musical legend Lionel Richie.

Another reason Carey should feel unbothered by this apparent diss is the fact that in the days since her infamous NYE performance, Billboard reports that “We Belong Together” streams have been through the roof.

Way to have the last laugh, Mimi.
