Mariah Carey’s new song is a glittery, butterfly-bedazzled breakup anthem
We’re still not entirely sure when lyric videos really came in vogue, but when they arrive bearing new music from iconic artists, we aren’t going to complain. Such is the case with Mariah Carey’s “Infinity,” a sparkly, glittering pop tune that also serves as a pretty straight-up, “Oh yes there’s hard feelings” breakup anthem.
It’s simple, really: The target of Mimi’s kiss-off is the one missing out, and she’s going to be her fabulous self on her own, but not before highlighting exactly how her ex fails at life. If this sounds like it’s inspired by her real-life breakup with Nick Cannon, well, you wouldn’t be the first to make that assumption — but just as likely, this song joins an overall musical canon about love, lust, joy, and heartbreak.
Like most breakup songs, Carey gets into the details of the breakup, but oh, she’s not interested in portraying some romanticized version of the reality of her relationship. Her first line in the song is “Why you mad?”, the verbal equivalent of the shrug emoji ¯_(ツ)_/¯, and the song only hits harder from there. After masterfully name-dropping Fritos, she really lays into the object of her ire: “Why you tryin’ to play like you’re so grown / Everything you own boy you still owe.” You can feel the chill no matter where you are.
Now, the video wouldn’t be a true Mariah Carey video without some sensual shots of the songstress, as well as some glittery effects, but “Infinity,” on its own, kind of looks like somebody’s animated PowerPoint presentation. (The melting heart and font choices, in particular.) No matter: After you’ve memorized the lyrics, you won’t need any help to belt along to this hit in rush hour traffic.
