Mariah Carey is BACK, and her new song is a gloriously shady breakup ballad

After an interesting few months, Mariah Carey is BACK with a breakup bop that we’re pretty sure is gonna become an instant Mariah classic.

It was teased last month (January 25th) that Carey had been in the studio working on new music, her fist since her 2014 album, Me. I Am Mariah…The Elusive Chanteuse and greatest hits collection, #1 To Infinity.

The singer, who has been busy recently with her fly-on-the-wall docu-series-cum-reality-show, also shared the single’s cover art, and we’re pretty sure that it’s making a not-so-subtle reference to her recently split with fiancé James Packer. In the snap, Mariah can be seen riding away in a getaway car wearing what looks suspiciously like a wedding dress (or wedding negligee at the very least…hey this is Mariah Carey after all).

Well, now Mariah Carey has *finally* released her new breakup single “I Don’t,” and it’s everything we wanted it to be.

As noted by The Fader, the low key R&B track, which features YG, is reminiscent of Donell Jones’ 1999 track “Where I Wanna Be,” and features soothing electric pianos, hip hop beats, and Mariah’s signature vocal runs. We have to say, we’re pretty impressed with the quality of Mariah’s vocal on the track, too, and she serves up some signature Mariah-isms, like that strong final chorus.

What’s more, the song’s lyrics are suitably sassy, with Mariah singing that her former partner’s love doesn’t mean anything to her any more.

"'Cause boy I was buggin'/Thinkin' somehow I could trust you/See, I used to love you/But I don't, I don't," she sings.

The singer also took to Facebook to answer fans questions where she revealed that there were no plans for a new album right now.

“I’m gonna be doing singles, because it’s more fun for me to just write singles and not focus totally on doing one whole album,” she revealed. “It seems like a lot more fun to just sit down, write a single, collaborate. Hopefully, at the end of that process, there will be an album and I can give it to you guys with some new songs as well as the songs that I’ve been working on.”

Carey also announced that she’d been working on a project with ‘dem babies, her two twins Monroe and Moroccan. Watch the Facebook live video below.

Tbh, we’re so glad that Mariah is back on the scene. After what must have been a difficult six months, it’s great to see her channeling her energy into being creative. We can’t wait to see what else she’s been cooking up in the studio!

Power to you MiMi.
