When is the March For Our Lives march on Washington? Mark it on your calendar now
On February 14th, a 19-year-old walked into Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida and opened fire. 17 people were left dead in the Florida school shooting, and many more were injured. The pain and suffering caused by this event is almost too much to handle. But the survivors will not be silenced. Students, staff, and members of the community are calling for change directly from lawmakers. One way they’re doing it is by organizing the March For Our Lives, a march on Washington to demand action on gun control. So, when is the March For our Lives?
The March For Our Lives will take place on March 24th. The students are calling on family, friends, and supporters across the nation to march on Washington and directly demand change from lawmakers. The amount of support is already massive; in a time when marches are becoming increasingly common, this could prove one of the biggest yet.
Students who survived the deadly school shooting want their tragedy to be a turning point. “People keep asking us, ‘What about the Stoneman Douglas shooting is going to be different, because this has happened before and change hasn’t come?’ This is it,” 11th grader Cameron Kasky told ABC News.
The March For Our Lives is not about political parties.
Although numerous politicians and political leaders have been criticized by survivors in the days following the school shooting (particularly Marco Rubio and Donald Trump, who’ve been singled out on more than one occasion), the March For Our Lives organizers insist this isn’t about political affiliations.
"School safety is not a political issue. There cannot be two sides to doing everything in our power to ensure the lives and futures of children who are at risk of dying when they should be learning, playing, and growing," the March For Our Lives website states. "The mission and focus of March For Our Lives is to demand that a comprehensive and effective bill be immediately brought before Congress to address these gun issues. No special interest group, no political agenda is more critical than timely passage of legislation to effectively address the gun violence issues that are rampant in our country."
You can still get involved with the March For Our Lives if you can’t make the trip to Washington.
How can you help? By marching in your own community on March 24th, sharing their information on social media, following their Instagram and Twitter accounts, and putting out the call for change.
March 24th is fast approaching. And if these brave students have any say in the matter, it will be a day we won’t soon forget.
