Wait, there’s a marathon where everyone dresses up as Avengers? Sign us UP!
For many, running 13.1 miles doesn’t sound like a whole lot of fun for an early Saturday morning. But now take that 13.1 miles, mix in all our favorite superheroes and add in a touch if pixie dust, and you’ve got the Avengers Half Marathon at the Disneyland Resort in California. Running even just one mile sounds so much more fun if you’re allowed to dress up as Thor to do so.
While you might know Disney best for its movies and theme parks, it’s also pretty big into marathons, too. RunDisney, the organization that handles these races in California and Florida, puts together about a dozen of them a year all with amazing themes, like Tinker Bell, Tower of Terror, and even one themed to Food and Wine (so much yes). This year marked the first ever Avengers Half Marathon, and hopefully this now becomes an annual thing.
The actual marathon takes runners on a course through the Disneyland resort area — so that includes both Disneyland and California Adventure theme parks — and through the streets of Anaheim. It’s also so much more than simply a race, but more like a giant party. There are participants of all ages, and along the course you can stop and meet up with your favorite Disney characters. In the case of this half marathon, that also included your favorite Avengers, too. And you get a pretty awesome Avengers-themed finisher’s medal for crossing the finish line.
If a half marathon seems a little too daunting, there are always other races like the Captain America 10k, or the Super Hero 5k. If there are little heroes out there who want in on the fun, there are Kid Races too, for children 8 and younger. There’s even a diaper dash for Earth’s mightiest and tiniest heroes.
This might be my favorite costume, because these runners are multiple Koenigs from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (a character clearly played by Patton Oswalt).
Looking at these Avengers Half pictures is a case of major FOMO. But don’t worry, there will be more marathons to run in the future. The Avengers Half was the last event for the year from RunDisney, and they kick off again in January with a full marathon in Disney World, and then a Star Wars-themed half marathon at Disneyland. While you might have missed your chance to run as Ant-Man, there’s still plenty of time to sign up and run as Han Solo.
