Man mistakes exit for bathroom on plane, is all of us on Mondays

This is one for the epic embarrassment files: a man tried to open the emergency door on a KLM flight from Edinburgh to Amsterdam while the plane was at 30,000 feet. He said he thought it was the door to the toilet, the Telegraph reports.

The man, named James Gray, faced some serious consequences for the mistake. He was detained, fined 600 euros and banned from the airline for five years. Oof, that’s rough! He says he didn’t actually try to open the door, but merely touched it in his confusion and pulled back when he realized it wasn’t the loo. The really harsh part: the airline didn’t tell him he was banned until he went to the counter to try to return home.

“I tried to explain it was a simple mistake. It was a misunderstanding,” Gray told the Telegraph. “The police came and arrested me. They weren’t too friendly.”

Understatement of the year, undoubtedly. Luckily, a kind friend paid for Gray’s flight back home on another airline.

Gray insists he understands the dangers of opening the emergency door during a flight and insisted he would never do such a thing. After all was said and done, we believe it.

Bizarrely enough, this isn’t the first time an airplane passenger has mistakenly tried to open a plane door. Earlier this year, a passenger got into it with flight attendants and tried to open the emergency exit of a plane —The Telegraph reports he made have had one too many drinks. And last December, an eager passenger activated the emergency exit, “triggering the inflatable slide” in order to get off the plane faster. This cost the man £10,290. Ouch.

Bottom line? Let’s be careful and thoughtful when opening any doors on an airplane.
