The first trailer for the “Mamma Mia!” sequel is completely bonkers in a GREAT way

Here we go again…10 years after Mamma Mia! sang its way into our hearts (and the box office), we’re officially returning to the picturesque island of Kalokairi to reunite with our favorite island dwellers and of course, the iconic music of ABBA.

Much like the first film centered around a spectacular party — err, wedding — the sequel finds all our favorites returning for a brand new soirée. The trailer opens with a pregnant Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) welcoming her mom’s BFFs Tanya (Christine Baranski) and Rose (Julie Walters) to the island, because there’s going to be another party. However, our beloved heroine Donna (Meryl Streep) can’t come to the party. Why? Because she’s DEAD.

It turns out this party may actually be a memorial for Donna.

Feeling disconnected from her (probably) late mother as she prepares to welcome her first child with Sky (Dominic Cooper), Sophie confides in Tanya and Rose. But as the greatest BFFs/ABBA cover band mates in all of the Greek Isles, the duo comfort her by sharing exactly how her mom made it work — complete with ABBA-filled flashbacks of that summer with Sophie’s three prospective dads.

Naturally this wouldn’t be Mamma Mia! without Sophie’s three dads who are all in top form in the sequel. After spending the majority of the first film competing to be Sophie’s favorite dad, they’ve all become the best of frenemies — and I’m here for it. Sam (Pierce Brosnan), Donna’s true love married her and presumably stayed on the island to help run the inn, while Harry (Colin Firth) and Bill (Stellan Skarsgård) return to the island in the sequel to (presuambly) pay their respects, and spend time with their “daughter.”

The sequel has also been Cherified as the iconic singer and actress makes an uninvited appearance at the gathering as Donna’s estranged mother. Andy Garcia also joins the cast a Fernando — just like the ABBA song!!

Baby Driver star Lily James plays young Donna, while Jeremy Irvine, Hugh Skinner, and Josh Dylan play young Sam, young Harry, and young Bill respectively.
