Today in totally depressing news, fewer ladies run companies than male CEOs named John
In case we needed more of a reminder that gender inequality in the work force is still very much a problem, a recent report put together by The New York Times concluded that there are more CEOs named “John” than there are female CEOs in TOTAL. Seriously.
The Times looked at the number of male CEOs and their names and compared this number (and the names) to the number of women CEOs, and found that out of the most popular dude names (John, David, Robert, James, Michael, and William), the amount of men named John and David was BIGGER than the amount of ALL the lady CEOs. To put it more simply, Feministing states, “For each woman CEO, there are four men named John, Robert, William or James. In fact, the number of companies run by men named John exceeds those run by women. (Same with David.).”
This chart shows just how few women are in charge of S.&P. 1500 companies:
The takeaway here? We’ve still got a long way to go until we reach gender equality in the work field. While we’ve made SOME progress (The Times states that most companies “appoint at least one woman,” but they still fail to bother more than that), it’s very clear that society as a whole is hesitant to appoint women to higher positions. “Far fewer of these large firms — currently one in 25 — are run by a woman serving as CEO,” according to The Times.
