Watch this IRL couple ask each other if they can make it long-distance
Meet Isobel and Adam. They’re a young couple who sat down to openly discuss whether or not their relationship will stand the test of long distance. And if you have ever been in a long distance relationship, you know how difficult and heartbreaking it inevitably can become.
Watching two high school students discuss love so candidly is incredibly moving. There is something so pure about young love, and Isobel and Adam truly represent that. Watching them discuss how they are totally themselves with one another brought me back to a time that I felt unabashedly myself around the person I loved. As we get older, it is harder to put ourselves back into that place —that raw love that you can really only feel in your first relationship. Gosh, those “dancing in the rain in the middle of Central Park” feelings just cannot be replicated, can they?
The video has its tense moments. Like when Isobel asks Adam why he doesn’t trust her —hey, all relationships have those moments of uncertainty, right? Adam discusses his fear of loss and betrayal, mostly stemming from the fact that he lost his mother. (BTW, don’t watch this video at work. Tears will flow.) The proof of their love, for me personally at least, comes from the way that Isobel expresses how much she wishes she could save Adam from his pain.
When Adam asks Isobel “do you really think we’ll last,” your heart may just break. Isobel describes how much she wants their relationship to last, but is also relatively realistic about the fact that they just might not make it. Isobel tells Adam that he is her best friend, and everything is perfect right now, and she wants them to last, but…
And that “but” is a killer.
However, there’s a silver lining. After acknowledging that neither of them knows what will happen in the future, Adam reminds Isobel of something really important.
What a poignant dude. We all need that reminder from time to time.
The video is a part of the “The And” series that sits couples down and encourages them to discuss the deepest, most sincere feelings that they have about their current or past relationship. If you feel like feeling some feelings, check it out.
In the meantime, take a look at Isobel and Adam’s story and try not to weep.
