And now, there are “Making A Murderer” songs, because of course
In the past month, a Making A Murderer fandom has been created. AND YES, it’s weird to call it a “fandom,” but the definition of fandoms states that it’s a group of people who are “characterized by a feeling of empathy and camaraderie with others who share a common interest.” And seeing as how that applies to all of us, since we’re all really invested in Making A Murderer, we’re a fandom, and let’s just move on.
Out of this Making A Murderer fandom, we’ve collected fan theories (of course), along with entire Etsy shops full of merchandise, and even some selfies. Now, there are songs, too, because why WOULDN’T there be songs?
The Arcs, the side-band project from The Black Key’s Dan Auerbach, were so thoroughly moved — and not moved in a good way — after their binge of Making A Murderer that they wrote, recorded, mixed, and mastered a brand new song inspired by the show in two days. When you feel strongly about something, you get stuff done.
“It’s like Billy Childish says, “We live in troubled times,’” The group writes on Soundcloud. “Last week, we got a sneak peek at what goes on behind the curtains of our criminal justice system. A few sleepless nights later we gathered in the studio and wrote this song.”
The song, called “Lake Superior” even includes lyrics like: “Manitowoc put Avery on the beach / Your alibi, will never do / When the whole town’s got it out for you.” It’s incredibly chilling, and TBH it’s also a really great song. Even better, all proceeds from the song will go to the Innocence Project — and that name sounds very familiar because it was discussed multiple times throughout Making A Murderer, and even worked with Steven Avery for a time being.
So take a listen to the song, get it stuck in your head for days, and then get back to thinking up other things we can do together as a Making A Murderer fandom. You know, besides freak out about the justice system and stuff.
