You can make wine in an Instant Pot, but it’s a crazy complicated process

Well, it’s official: You can make anything in an Instant Pot, and apparently, not even alcoholic beverages are off limits. According to a discovery recently made by a food blogger, you can, in fact, make Instant Pot wine, so if you’ve been on the fence about buying one, this might just convince you. There’s a small catch, though — it’s ridiculously hard to do, even for experienced chefs.

Considering the fact that Instant Pots are practically the superhero of the culinary world right now, it’s not like we should be surprised at this development — and we’re totally hailing the guy who figured this whole thing out as a hero, too. The blogger, David Murphy, is a professional recipe developer, so he did have a bit of experience going in. And after reading his blog post where he details the steps, it’s pretty clear he deserves some major props, because this definitely wasn’t an easy task to accomplish.

After a lot of experimenting with different settings, Murphy discovered that using the Instant Pot’s yogurt setting is key. After that, you start with a little juice, sugar, and wine yeast, and you’re on your way. Oh, did that sound simple to you? Well, it’s really, really not.

It takes 48 hours to make wine, and that’s just the part that requires the Instant Pot.

After that, the wine has to sit in a bottle for awhile — Murphy recommends eight days — before it’ll actually taste good. Basically, if you’re looking for a way to make wine at home because you’re too lazy to run to Target, this is not the method for you. But when it’s done, Murphy says it tastes a little like chocolate and cherries…and he can definitely taste the alcohol in it, too.

"I seriously didn’t think this was going to work at all," Murphy wrote on his blog. "I was expecting a failure, but I was patient and played that annoying waiting game. Honestly, it was so much better than some of those cheap bottles of wine that I’ve bought. Dare I say, even better than the 2 buck Chuck from Trader Joe’s!"

If you don’t need wine RIGHT THIS SECOND or if you want to brew some homemade wine as a gift (or to prove you can, like Murphy), this method might just be perfect for you. It’s complicated, but in the end, it’s kind of cool how magical the Instant Pot is. Now there’s really no reason not to buy one.
